Blockchain Driver’s Licences in South Korea

Elsewhere, South Korea reached one million people who have foregone their physical driver’s license in favor of a blockchain-powered digital alternative used in conjunction with the PASS smartphone app.

And that number represents over 3% of the country’s whole driving population. It sits at 32.6 million licensed drivers in 2019, based on Statista. This is the first-ever authorized digital identification card used throughout South Korea. Also, it received approval by the nation’s Ministry of Science and ICT in September 2019.

Aside from that, the National Police Agency launched the project in May. They did this by working with the Korea Road Traffic Authority and the country’s three major telecommunication providers (SK, KT, and LG U+). Until last month, 27 of South Korea’s driver’s license testing centers used the PASS app to renew and reissue digital driver’s licenses.

Also, they can use the legally recognized ID solution for identification and proof-of-age requirements, like at convenience stores and retail chains selling cigarettes and alcohol. Users show their licenses via a barcode or QR code on the app. Non-Korean residents get English versions of the licenses.

On the other hand, for different industries, like rental cars and shared rides services, they are researching the ability to utilize these IDs as a replacement for face-to-face verification checks.

This week, South Korea revealed multiple integrations of blockchain technology. They will expand Seongnam’s payment program by issuing new digital gift certificates. At the same time, beachgoers in Busan could pay for services with Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
