Insomniac Games’ Future

Sony recently reported about buying the Insomniac Games, creator of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet, and clank. And after the acquisition closes, it will be part of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios (WWS) at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In addition to that, PlayStation celebrated the major acquisition with a tweet saying how “honored and thrilled to join forces with this legendary developer.”

Even after the acquisition closes, the management team of Insomniac will continue to operate the studio. However, it is now in partnership with Sony’s internal studio in San Mateo, California.

Aside from that, the headquarters of the American firm is in Burbank, California and it has another branch in Durham, North Carolina, which started in 2009.

And this is the very first new PlayStation internal Developer in a long time. Sony reported in 2016 about ForwardWorks, a studio working on smartphone games. Also, this was the firm’s last studio acquisitions which came at the start of the decade.

Insomniac Games History

Meanwhile, Insomniac was established as Xtreme Software in 1994. And ever since, Price remained the company’s CEO. Until now, the studio remained independent for about 25 years, but it is quite famous as the creator of franchises. And it debuted exclusively on PlayStation platforms such as Spyro the Dragon, Resistance, and Ratchet & Clank. Then, non-PlayStation titles from Insomniac include Edge of Nowhere and forthcoming Stormlanf on Oculus Rift.

Moreover, in 2016, the studio also released Song of the Deep on Windows PC, PS4, and Xbox One. While in 2013, it launched Fuse on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The 2014 Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive became the biggest project of Insomniac outside of Sony. Then later, it became available to PC.

And the PS4 exclusive Spider-Man was the most recent and successful title of the studio. It sold 13.2 million copies around the world as of July 28.
