Scotland bans home visits to stop new Covid-19 cases

In two days, Glasgow and its surroundings registered 130 new cases and affected 800,000 people.

Sottcish authorities imposed new restrictions in and around Glasgow on Wednesday to curb an outbreak of Covid-19 cases. Meanwhile, the London government reviewed a relaxation in the Manchester area after clashing with local leaders’ criticism.

The UK is Europe’s hardest-hit country with 41,500 confirmed deaths from the coronavirus pandemic. However, it reaffirms its determination to act locally against the virus. The country tries to avoid another nationwide lockdown with disastrous economic consequences.

The restrictions in Glasgow and its surrounding area, forbid receiving other household members. They also prohibit receiving relatives or visit them in their homes. All these restrictions resulted in the frustration of some inhabitants of the city.

According to the statement of John Swinney, Scotland’s Deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday on the BBC that infections in the area are occurring between homes and not in pubs and restaurants. The same has previously happened in other Scottish cities like Aberdeen.

Scotland is a nation of 5.5 million people with autonomy in health and education. They introduced a two-week quarantine for travelers from Greece due to the increase in cases imported from its islands.

England lifted the Covid-19 restrictions

In England, similar restrictions had been lifted the day before in Manchester and its surroundings. Still, local officials announced this Wednesday that it was premature to do so in two towns, Bolton and Trafford, where infections continue to increase.

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, asked the inhabitants of those areas to continue to follow the measures despite their lifting. He stated that they were in use in other localities with fewer infections.

Shortly after, Matt Hancock, the Health Minister, announced that with local leaders, he decided to maintain the restrictions in Bolton and Trafford.
