Apple Co-Founder Wozniak Sues YouTube

Elsewhere, lawyers for Steve Wozniak and 17 other people were adversely hurt by fake Bitcoin (BTC) giveaway scams on YouTube. They have accused the platform and parent firm Google of not acting immediately to ban such content.

Based on a July 22 announcement from Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, Google and its subsidiary, YouTube did not protect its users from fake BTC giveaway scam channels with images and videos of Wozniak and other celebrities.

According to the report, the hijacked channels operate giveaway scams. They said that anyone who sends cryptocurrency to a specific address will get much more cryptocurrency back. But, in reality, they got nothing in return.

Wozniak stated, “If YouTube had acted quickly to stop this to a reasonable extent, we would not be here now.”

In addition to what Wozniak said, he explained that it looks like YouTube, like Google, relies on algorithms, and no particular effort requiring custom software was employed immediately in these criminal activity cases. If there is a crime committed, they need to reach humans who can stop it. Wozniak asked, “What human would see posts like these and not ban them as criminal immediately?”

One of the people at Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, Joe Cotchett noted that YouTube knowingly let the Bitcoin scam go on for months, promoted it, and profited with it, selling targeted advertising.

Also, while the complaint includes Wozniak, there are 17 others from the United States, the U.K., Europe, Canada, China, Japan, and Malaysia. And all of them became victims of the BTC scam.

Ripple Against Apple

Wozniak’s lawsuit arrived a day after YouTube’s dismissal bid in a similar case from Ripple Labs. The crypto company sued the platform for its alleged failure to stop XRP scammers and impersonators.

But in a statement on July 21, the legal team of YouTube claimed that the video-sharing platform is not liable for any content, including scams, given by third parties.

Contrary to Ripple’s case that they filed in federal court, Wozniak’s legal team went to a judge in the Superior Court of the State of California in the Country of San Mateo – a state-run court.

Both Wozniak and his whole legal team will hold an in-person and virtual press conference on July 23 in Burlingame, California.
