Endgame of the US-China War is ‘Lose-lose’, Warned Havard Professor

Economic News: The US-China relationship looks set to worsen, and the endgame – both sides will lose, Havard Professor said.

According to Graham Allison, this comes after the two presidents seek to maintain control domestically. This is happening as the coronavirus pandemic ravages the two economies. Graham Allison is Harvard’s Douglas Dillon professor of government. He was also the assistant secretary of Defense and special advisor to the secretary of Defense under Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronal Reagan.

He added that the end game would be lose-lose and hopes that they won’t do any permanent damage.

The rivalry between the two largest world economies could result in the collapse of the phase one trade deal and a continuation of accusations about coronavirus’ origin, the professor explained.

The US-China rivalry to get worse, other experts say

Other experts added to Allison’s sentiments that US-China rivalry could get worse.

Before the virus outbreak, China faced difficulties fulfilling its commitment in the phase of one trade deal. The deal required China to buy an additional $200 billion of US goods and services by 2021 in addition to the 2017 levels.

Experts say the pandemic has made it even more difficult. Some experts also warned that the US-China tension could lead to a cold war.

However, Cheng Li said neither of the two countries was ready for a cold war even though relations had deteriorated faster than expected.

Cheng Li is a researcher and a senior fellow in the foreign policy program from Brookings Institution, and director of the John L. Thornton China Center.

Li said policymakers on both sides were not ready for such a war. The war will be devastating, and there will be no winner. The war should and must be prevented, he added.
