Clinton Says It’s ‘Shameful’ the UK is hiding Russia Report

Former US Secretary of State and presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton has termed the UK government as shameful. This comes after a decision by the UK government to delay the publication of a report that many believe can expose Russia’s involvement in the Brexit vote. The 2016 referendum resulted in Britain’s decision to exit the European Union.

Dumbfounded

Hillary Clinton spoke to the BBC on Monday, where she said she was dumbfounded that the UK government could take such action. This is after a prolonged investigation that involved several intelligence agencies in the UK. Observers expect the report to reveal in detail how Russia has managed to influence the political regime in the UK.

The major point of concern is the 2016 EU referendum (Brexit). In that referendum, Britons voted unanimously to leave the EU and this subsequently led to PM David Cameron’s resignation. Theresa May assumed office thereafter, but her stay did not last long with Boris Johnson taking her position.

The country has however been facing tough times with uncertainties about its proposed exit from the EU. The uncertainty has seen other countries in the Eurozone experience economic times made worse by a US-China trade war.

Elections in Sight

With elections set for 12 December this year in the UK, the report comes at a very crucial time. The contents of the report are sure to reveal a lot and Clinton who has been a victim of the Russians is gunning for its release.

A report by a committee led by Robert Mueller revealed that the Russians interfered in the US Presidential election in 2016. The act of involvement was such that it would hurt Clinton’s campaign and give an upper hand to Trump.

The report, however, does not say whether there was a conspiracy between Trump’s campaign team and the Russians. For the most part, the Russians used social media to spread propaganda. There was additionally a wide leak of documents some of which did serious damage to Clinton’s image in the run-up to the elections.

A Cyber Attack

The Labor Party reported recently that it had been the subject of a cyber-attack but none of its systems compromised. A source in the Labor Party reported that the attacks emanated from Russia and Brazil. This improves Clinton’s case as to why the publication of the report should happen sooner than later.

The UK government on its part is talking about standard procedures that are delaying the publishing of the report.  Issues such as vetting of the report and responding to it before release might take weeks according to Deputy Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Russian government on its part maintains that it never meddles in any way with foreign politics. But until the publication of the full report and the truth is told to the masses, it remains a dilemma whether Russia will interfere in the forthcoming elections. The Mueller Report will give critics strong arguing points about Russia’s meddling in foreign politics and collusion with aspirants
