Smithfield Foods Exports Pork to China

On Tuesday, Smithfield Foods’ slaughterhouse in Virginia announced it has used to slice up meats for American sandwiches and holiday dinners. But recently, employees now box up dead body pigs to ship to China.

The information gathered was provided by the employees, local spokespersons, and industry sources.

There has been a complete change at the Smithfield, Virginia. The plant demonstrates how the global meat industry is adjusting to profit from African swine fever.

ASF is a fatal pig disease that has slaughtered millions of hogs in China.

Moreover, this crisis has turned the world’s top pork consumer into a significant meat importer.

Six years ago, Smithfield Foods was bought by China’s WH Group Ltd for $4.7 billion. The firm has then modernized its U.S. processing movement to direct meat to China.

Smithfield Foods produced half of the world’s pork before swine fever devastated the industry.

The world’s biggest pork butcher is located and operates a white, box-shaped meat plant in Smithfield, Virginia.

Smithfield Foods Further Operations

In addition, it is home to 8,000 people. Moreover, the company’s headquarters also situated there.

It is also a broader tourist economy. Smithfield Foods is well-known for its hams, bacon, and sausages.

Since late spring, pigs sent to the plant are slaughtered and sliced into thirds.

In a news report, company employees shared that the industry sources the meats which are carved to prepare for shipment to China, where Chinese employees process the carcasses further.

Meanwhile, Smithfield Foods refused to comment on the change. Moreover, it did not allow a reporter to visit the Virginia plant, which slaughters around 10,000 pigs a day.

Elsewhere, Dominion Energy has announced it is growing a partnership with Virginia-based Smithfield Foods.

The affiliation is by investing $500 million in manure-to-energy ventures in several states.

On the other side, the preliminary investment of turning animal waste into energy will unveil in Virginia and North Carolina. Each project entails a cluster of 15 to 20 farms.
