The US prepares to distribute COVID vaccine before November

The President Trump administration urged US states to prepare to distribute a possible vaccine against COVID-19 by November 1.

Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote a letter to the Trump Administration. In the letter, he urgently requests help to expedite applications for these distribution facilities.

Additionally, the full operation could take place two days before the presidential elections, in which Trump seeks a second term.

Judd Deere, White House spokesman, announced that the United States would not participate in the global initiative to develop, produce and distribute the possible vaccine against the coronavirus coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The White House said that the country would continue cooperating with its international partners to defeat the virus. Still, it will not be limited to multinational organizations influenced by the World Health Organization and China.

Deere said the United States would not participate in the Platform for Global Access to Covid-19 Vaccines (Covax), coordinated by the WHO. The US will carry out studies of possible vaccines, the Washington Post reported.

The US decision to act only on vaccination studies could lead to a shortage

In July of this year, Democratic Senator Robert Menéndez announced through his Twitter account that the Senate received the notification about the United States’ withdrawal from the WHO.

Menendez added that calling President Trump’s response to COVID-19 chaotic and incoherent does not do him justice. This will not protect the lives and interests of Americans. This leaves them sick and the United States alone.

According to experts, the US decision to act only on vaccination studies could lead to a shortage, both for the US and the global population.

Suppose a vaccine in clinical stages is registered in the United States. In that case, it will not be clear how it will be distributed worldwide. Questions arise also on what will be its price, and to which countries and population groups will prioritize access. If the vaccine is available outside of the United States, it would have a similar effect on Americans.
