SunExpress Orders Another Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft

In a much-desired win, during the Dubai Airshow, the plane maker Boeing declared it had closed a deal with SunExpress. The contract was for another 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

Moreover, the Turkish carrier turns out to be the second airline to vouch for the grounded jet. This happened after the order, following International Airlines Group (IAG).

According to Boeing, SunExpress is implementing options for ten additional 737 MAX 8 jets. SunExpress is a subsidiary of Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa.

The orders were in addition to a preceding deal for 32 MAX aircraft. In an evaluation, the new orders are valuing $1.2 billion at list prices.

At first, SunExpress planned to order 15 737 MAX 8 jets. They all contain alternatives for another 10 MAX 8s, way back 2014.

The scheme was all part of a significant procurement agreement for up to 50 Boeing aircraft, comprising 25 737-800NG airliners.

Over the years, the Turkish transporter has progressively expanded its fleet of mostly Boeing 737s.

SunExpress’ Objective for Acquiring 200 Boeing Jets

Currently, it conducts up to 65 737-800 airplanes, including seven Airbus A330-200s.

In an official press release, CEO of SunExpress Jens Bischof stated, “We have a long-standing, strong and trustful relationship with Boeing and thus we decided to turn our option into an order.”

He also added, “We stand behind our strategic decision to phase the 737 MAX into our fleet for all of its economic and ecological advantages, mid- and long-term.”

In March 2019, the carrier will be the second to convey confidence in the grounded aircraft since its grounding after the order. It adheres to IAG’s bombshell announcement at the Paris Air Show in June 2019.

Meanwhile, the declaration of the group’s intention is to acquire 200 Boeing 737 MAX jets.

The bid, which is signed in the form of a Letter of Intent, contains both 737-8 and 737-10 versions of the MAX. The aircraft was valued at more than $24 billion at list prices.
