Reliance Retail’s Investment Purge

It seems like Reliance Retail will not be running with investment surprises anytime soon. It has been receiving unprecedented interest from overseas investors in recent weeks.

Its 400-million dollar boost from General Atlantic is the firm’s third closed deal for the month.

Earlier in the month, it sealed high-stake deals with two other American investment firms. Thus, supporting its quest towards expanding retail business.

KKR & Co added $754 million to its basket while Silver Lake Partner followed a billion-dollar deal.

The last rounds of investments are not the first time that the two financers allocated funds in India’s largest retail company, the same with General Atlantic.

According to reports, Reliance Retail also offered the technology juggernaut Amazon.com Inc to take a big piece of the pie on a $20 billion worth of investment.

Should the plan pull through, this will be the biggest deal made for both firms.

This global investment collection aims to potentially drive the firm to rival against India’s current market favorites. Namely, Amazon India itself and the Walmart-owned Flipkart.

Business Expansion and Long-term Prospects

Along with its dedication to expanding, it announced its plan to buy the retail and logistics business of Kishore Bayani Future Group over a deal amounting to $3.38 billion.

Reliance Retail Limited runs chains of supermarkets and online grocery, fast-fashion outlets, among others. It is considered as India’s largest consumer electronics chain store.

The oil-to-telecom venture has been strutting away from its core business in recent months to explore its retailing capabilities.

Yesterday, Reliance Retail was reportedly having advanced-level talks with Abu Dhabi’s state fund Mubadala Investment Co for a $500 million to $1 billion investment.

A representative from Reliance Retail neither confirmed nor denied reports. However, rumors share that the company is in the on-going process of evaluating various opportunities in the line-up.
