Microsoft Makes a Comeback in Mobile Phone Business

Microsoft’s first Android phone makes its debut today.

In October 2019, Microsoft’s announcement of the two additions to its Surface line circulated in the technology news for a long time.

The Surface Neo is a dual-screen laptop running Windows 10X and the Surface Duo is a dual-screen Android phone. The latter finally lands today for preorder. Sales will officially commence next month.

The company did not wait further for its supposed release date in the coming holidays. This is to take advantage of the momentum that the technology industry experience since the start of the pandemic.

The Surface Duo weighs 250g, heavier than the average weight of most iPhones. It comes with a fingerprint reader for security and identification. Also, the unit very thin making it very easy to slip into any carry-on.

Its specs are comparable to the majority of phones that are already in the market. The major difference is the foldable phone positions itself as a tool for increased productivity.

It lets users work without having to close a link they have just opened: the other screen makes up for that. The owner may use two apps simultaneously.

According to the product developer, its advantage against the regular smartphone is that the traditional version’s single screen is not designed to let users do multitasking.

The company thereby capitalized on this lack to develop a new technology which will eliminate just that. The Duo offers a seamless cross-device experience, the chief product officer for the device said.

The Surface Duo is a Tipping Point for Microsoft

Its screen folds like a laptop. The Surface Duo can be used as a regular book with the help of third-party apps like Amazon kindle.

Compared to traditional phones, the modern technology device is priced considerably higher at $1,399 for the base model of 126GB.

Some argue that this is far too over-priced. But tech reviewers say that its inclusion under the Surface brand which boasts some of Microsoft’s high-end computers justifies the price.

After the flop of foldable mobile phones in the past, Microsoft is weathering a rather difficult market.

Recently, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 faced backlash after tech analysts received defective units for review. The 5G-powered device delayed its launch from April to September.

The two foldable phones will, therefore, enter the market at a relatively close timeframe. This marks enthusiasm for the small yet growing patronage of foldable phones. The no-crease, $1500 Motorola Razr garnered mixed reviews from technology enthusiasts.

The Surface Duo will serve as a litmus test for Microsoft. It may either add to the giant’s already long list of achievements, or it may bring the company under the fire, again.

Just a trip down memory lane, the tech alpha experienced a $7.6 billion loss in 2015 after its failed acquisition of the former mobile phone leader, Nokia.

Since then, CEO Satya Nadella said that Microsoft will step back from the half-trillion-dollar smartphone market, which at that time is already commanded by Apple, Samsung, and Huawei.
