MGM Resorts Faces Massive Data Breach, Firm Files Complaints

MGM Resorts International is facing a new case that could potentially cost it billions of dollars. The US casino operator’s former guests and investors weren’t thrilled their personal information was breached, of course.

Well, in this day and age, technology has become a crucial part of businesses. This includes casinos and resorts.

In such an industry, personal information is required and asked by the management. With that power comes great responsibility; the privacy of players and guests are highly confidential.

And just recently, MGM Resorts International confirmed over 10.6 million guests from its hotel services were involved in the data breach.

Morgan & Morgan filed a formal lawsuit against the casino, creating a major buzz in the technology news sites. Why? The lawyer of the said firm is John Yanchunis, a known figure in the industry.

Yanchunis represented some of the Yahoo users back in 2013 and 2016 when a data breach also struck the company.

Just last week, the company confirmed last summer it has found unauthorized access to its cloud server. According to MGM Resorts, the breached cloud contained limited information about its previous guests.

And recently, a technology website published a research article saying that over 10.6 million guests who stayed at the resort were affected. The personal information of the said guests was also published on a hacking forum just recently.

The affected guests span from celebrities, top officials of major businesses, media personnel, and even government officials. All of whom had their personal data leaked including their email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses.

Morgan & Morgan sued MGM Resorts International as a complaint on damages and injunctive relief. The case was filed at the US District Court for the District of Nevada.

Yanchunis has been standing against major companies and their problems in modern technology for years now. The lawyer has charged data breach cases against Equifax, Facebook, and Cambridge Analytica.

Outlast and Stepping Down

Good news comes for the casino as it’s the last one standing in securing a license to operate a casino in Osaka, Japan. Still, the Japanese government has to decide which city will host the gambling halls of the chosen company, and the odds are high for MGM and Osaka.

Among the cities being considered are Tokyo and Yokohama, which will have to abide by the integrated resort laws.

And aside from MGM Resorts, the other companies vying for the place is Las Vegas Sands, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, Caesars Entertainment, and Galaxy Entertainment.

Meanwhile, MGM Resorts’ current chairman and CEO, Jim Murren, announced that he’s stepping down prior to his contract’s ending. According to reports, Murren will stay in his post until a successor is assigned.
