Joe Biden demands closer review of Covid-19 origins 

President Joe Biden has ordered a closer intelligence review about two scenarios the Covid-19 pandemic’s origins. Biden announced on Wednesday that he expects the U.S. intelligence community to report back to him in 90 days.

According to the President, earlier this year, he tasked the intelligence community with preparing a report on their analysis of the origins of coronavirus, including whether it emerged from a laboratory accident or from human contact with an infected animal.

So far, the U.S. Intelligence Community has been contemplating two likely scenarios. However, it has not reached a definitive conclusion on this question. One element in the I.C. leans toward the lab leak scenario, while two elements lean toward the human contact scenario – each with low or moderate confidence. But most elements do not believe there is sufficient information to choose one as more plausible over the other – noted Biden.

The intelligence community uses a unique way to present its findings to sitting presidents. It also explains when different agencies within the community disagree. The community uses a low-moderate-high scale to quantify the level of confidence experts have in the accuracy of their assessments.

Meanwhile, White House principal deputy press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre didn’t commit to publicly releasing a future report’s findings.

Why did the U.S. President ask for this information now?

The origins of the Covid-19 pandemic remain officially unknown to the date, but they came under increased scrutiny recently.

The one hypothesis claims the virus may have escaped from a Chinese laboratory. Initially, analysts dismissed it as a conspiracy theory. However, this idea has in recent months gained more mainstream traction. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Rochelle Walensky recently noted that a lab-leak origin was one possibility.

On the other hand, the CDC’s website claims that while the exact source of the Covid-19 outbreak is unknown, they know that it originally came from an animal, likely a bat. It seems Biden decided to end the speculation on the subject.
