Instagram Continues to Expand its Operations 

Instagram’s parent company Meta made an interesting announcement. From now on, a small number of Instagram content creators can directly charge followers a monthly subscription fee for exclusive content.

It announced the news in a company blog post, saying it is part of an effort to help enable content creators to make a living through its platforms. Facebook launched a similar subscriptions service in 2020. Now, the company wants to test a similar service on Instagram after positive feedback from Facebook content creators. 

The social media giant previously said it would not collect any fees from creators on Facebook Subscription purchases until 2023 at the earliest. Meta said this would also apply to Instagram Subscriptions.

Instagram and content creators 

A small handful of Instagram content creators can set a monthly price of their choice. Content creators can also unlock a “subscribe” button on their profile and offer new benefits to these subscribers. Moreover, they will see a subscriber badge next to comments and messages from their subscribers to more easily identify them. 

Its new feature will only be available to a limited number of creators based in the country. Nevertheless, it also stated that it plans to expand the service to more creators over the coming months. 

Instagram’s parent company Meta is not alone, as Twitter recently announced a similar subscription business model for users. 

According to the company’s spokesperson, TikTok is testing the idea of allowing its creators to charge subscriptions for their content at the moment. In fact, the app enables fans to give money to creators. They do this by sending them a tip or by purchasing virtual gifts that can be sent to creators and cashed in. 

Meta and other social media platforms invested heavily in content creators for their platforms. Meta plans to invest more money in programs that give creators new ways to earn money.
