Ikea will start ‘Green Friday’ from November

From November 23 to 29, Ikea will launch ‘Green Friday.’ In the context of the traditional ‘Back Friday,’ it is a campaign that will promote the repurchase of the company’s furniture. This is to encourage the circular economy and responsible consumption.

Thus, instead of flash sales and significant discounts, the Swedish multinational company wants to buy furniture that its customers no longer need. They will receive a reimbursement card from Ikea, as reported by the company.

This ‘Green Friday’ will take place globally in stores in 27 countries during the ‘Black Friday’ commercial period. By this symbolic campaign, the company intends to show its commitment to becoming a circular and climate-positive in all its operations by 2030.

According to the company’s representatives, this campaign’s objective is to give a second life to thousands of products and prevent them from ending up as garbage. The company encourages everyone to contribute to protecting the planet. This is possible with access to affordable furniture and decoration products for a great majority of people.

Appraised value

Depending on the furniture condition, the appraised value could reach up to 50% of its original price. During the ‘Green Friday’ period, the Ikea Family members will receive a double buyback price of their regular appraisal.

The products that Ikea repurchases to its customers will be put up for sale for the same appraisal price offered to their original owners. This will occur in the space of the stores called ‘Circular Hub,’ previously called Attic of Opportunities.

In addition to promoting the circular economy, the campaign aims to allow Ikea customers to acquire more affordable furniture for their homes.

Last year alone, the company gave a second life to 47 million products. Ikea recovered them, repackaging them, and putting them up for sale in its stores.

How the buyback Friday procedure works

Ikea customers get an Ikea refund card by selling back their used IKEA furniture. They can fill out the company’s short online form telling what they want to sell back to IKEA. After completing the form, they will immediately receive an estimate of the used furniture’s sell-back price. IKEA family members get a double offer, valid only during the campaign period of November 24 – December 3, 2020.

After finishing the procedure, customers should bring the estimate and used furniture to the nearest IKEA store’s Exchange and Returns section. There the company co-workers will check its condition to confirm the final valuation.

Once the inspection is done, the company will issue an IKEA refund card for the final buyback value. They can then use this credit to spend on something they need at IKEA. The card will be valid up to one year after the card’s date of issue.
