Huawei To Be Banned from The United Kingdom’s 5G Plans

The United Kingdom is now looking to ban Chinese technology giant Huawei from its 5G endeavors. Although the timeline for this is unclear, it is a major blow to the company, as it is still campaigning to earn peoples’ favor.

Earlier today, local news reports said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will likely ban the company soon. Some consider the massive move a landmark decision, which would ultimately provoke China.

Despite that, the British government’s decision would also earn praise from Washington and other allies in the West. It wins a plaudit from US President Donald Trump, who has been a blocking China’s economic and technological growth throughout his presidency.

According to technology news reports, the United States has been pressuring the British Prime Minister to reverse his January decision. One could recall that Johnson granted a limited role to Huawei earlier this year, a move that worried other Western allies.

Perhaps Britain took back its grant because of the controversial national security law pushed by China regarding Hong Kong. Aside from that, British officials also felt dismay over the perception that Beijing wasn’t transparent with the coronavirus outbreak.

The British National Security Council, headed by the BPM himself, shall meet tomorrow to discuss Huawei. Media Secretary Oliver Dowden will announce the decision to the United Kingdom’s House of Commons.

Although it’s still unknown how the meeting will go tomorrow or what the timeline of the ban will be. Some believe that the ban will gradually take place, slowly capping Huawei’s market share to zero.

Not Too Fast

Banning the technology giant too fast could hurt the country, its operators, and consumers. This is what several experts, who feel anxious about the move, warned.

Aside from that, it would also trigger a critical geopolitical rift with Beijing.

Modern technology has allowed Huawei to expand its influences and reach around the globe. However, the anti-Beijing sentiment among countries, particularly in the West, has hurt its business.

Just recently, there were reports that British telecom operators warned against a hasty ban on the Chinese technology company. BT Chief Executive Officer, Philip Jansen, urged the government earlier today not to move or decide too hastily regarding the ban.

According to Jansen, it could lead to serious outages and even possibly security issues.

When asked about a five-year timeline about the ban, the CEO said that every move must be certain. He added that the direction must not lead to more risk.
