Global Leaders Call for Calm after Iran’s Attack

On Wednesday morning, Iran launched dozens of ballistic missiles against the U.S. and its coalition forces in Iraq. However, it is still unclear if the attack led to any casualties.

The attack is the latest step in the escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran following the killing of Qasem Soleimani – Iran’s top military commander last week.

Now global leaders are calling for calm amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, is one of the world leaders calling for dialogue.

“The use of weapons must cease now to give room to dialogue. We are all called upon to do everything likely to revive talks. There cannot be enough of that,” she told the reporters on Wednesday.

“We have established and time-tested relations with many actors in the territory and beyond to de-escalate the situation,” she added.

The executive arm of the E.U. has supported the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), heavily – in a deal signed in 2015. The agreement was signed between Iran, U.S., U.K, Germany, France, China, and Russia to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

In 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump exited the deal; his predecessors had negotiated.

Meanwhile, the E.U. has pressed Iran to stick to its commitments. On Wednesday, Joseph Borrell, EU’s coordinator for the deal, said the situation in the Middle East was “extremely worrying.”

The E.U.’s foreign policy chief also said that the current situation put a risk to the efforts of the past years. It also had implications for the critical work of the anti-Daesh coalition.

Boris Johnson, the U.K. Prime Minister, also said that the 2015 nuclear deal remained the best way of preventing a rapid nuclear increase in Iran.

Earlier, Dominic Raab, the U.K.s Foreign Secretary, condemned Iraq’s attack on Iraqi military bases hosting the U.S., U.K., and other coalition forces.

He urged Iran to pursue urgent de-escalation instead of reckless and dangerous attacks. He added that war in the Middle East would only benefit the Daesh and other terrorist groups.

Meanwhile, France President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Rouhani, the Iranian President, before the attacks. Macron expressed his deep concern over recent attacks and called on Iran to refrain from any measures that would further aggravate tensions.

The Chinese foreign ministry is also urging parties involved to refrain from aggressive action. They warned that tension in the Middle East was no one’s interest.

On Tuesday, Germany also decided to withdraw most of its troops out of Iraq as Deutsche Welle, the German broadcaster reported.

Spain has also pulled out some of its troops from Iraq. The Spanish government said Wednesday.
