Ford Teams Up with Intel Corp for Autonomous Driving Unit

Automobile giant, Ford Motor Co, will finally work with technology giant Intel Corp’s Mobileye, on an autonomous driving unit. The two companies will work together to develop an improved collision avoidance system for the company’s automobiles.

The carmaker unveiled the news earlier today and it immediately made headlines as it poses a threat to Tesla.

According to the No. 2 automaker in the US, its collaboration will work on camera-based collision warning. The Mobileye will help the company to develop the tech, which could save the lives of hundreds of people.

Aside from that, the team-up will help with working on camera-based detection of pedestrians and vehicles. They will also focus on lane-keeping features for Ford’s cars like the F-159 and Mustang Mach-E units.

The two companies did not reveal the financial details of said collaboration.

Technology news reports say the automaker said that Mobileye will provide its famous EyeQ sensing tech.

Intel will also bring its vision-processing software to support the automaker’s Co-Pilot360 system. Aside from that, the collaboration will also work on hand-free driving features, which they will introduce by 2021.

The company will reportedly include Mobileye’s logo in the displays of its driver-assist communications systems. And it is also considering using Mobileye’s Roadbook map system to its new automobile units.

Back in 2017, Mobileye was purchased by Intel for approximately 15.3 billion US dollars. And as of writing, its currently considered the leader in advanced driving tech.

Aside from Ford, Intel’s Mobileye has reportedly worked with 13 of the top 15 largest automobile makers in the world.

Project Apollo

The company is not just known for its vehicles, it’s also regarded as one of the most resourceful firms at times of need. While the automobile industry struggles, the company devices a new plan to tackle amidst the worsening pandemic.

Modern technology has helped the company grow into what it is today. And its efforts in the past to reconstruct its production and warehouses for what is necessary have come in handy now.

The company launched Project Apollo, named after the Apollo 13 space mission, to help give employees new assignments. Some of the tasks include helping the production of medical equipment or designing new products that are of immediate necessity.

The company rolled out production for N95 masks that were in demand due to the pandemic. Aside from that, Ford also helped build air-purifying respirators to help hospitals that faced serious shortages.

The automaker began making respirators with makeshift designs from their existing line of production to work efficiently.

There were reports that the company even converted its facilities in Michigan to help make ventilators.
