Facebook Takes a Big Hit from the Massive Ad Boycott

Social media giant Facebook is in critical condition, as a third of its advertisers pull out from the platform. The technology company faces major hurdles as brands join in on the month-long boycott against it.

The company has been struggling to appease its advertisers, failing to convince them to stay. Over the past few days, a string of brand pull-outs occurred, while the platform fights hate speech.

Earlier this week, two famous brands, Ford and Adidas, joined the advertising boycott, hitting the already struggling company.

A recent survey found that a third of its major advertisers are willing to and are likely to suspend their ads. Furthermore, 40% of the advertisers are also considering joining the boycott.

According to technology news reports, brands that have already pulled out include Honda, Coca-Cola, Hershey’s, Unilever, and Verizon Communications.

Other brands include Starbucks Pepsi, which has, along with the previous ones, paused its advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. These companies are supporting the “Stop Hate for Profit” campaign, which is against any antisemitic rhetoric and hate speech.

The boycott has also reached international attention, as foreign companies also start joining in. Just recently, Britvic PLC, a London based company, also announced its suspension of advertisements on the platform.

Britvic owns various brands, including Robinsons and Fruit Shoot. The beverage company now calls on other advertisings to commit to stronger actions against hateful contents and the spread of misinformation on Facebook.

Some advertisers are also motivating other companies to demand “brand safety” amidst the ongoing issue. This addresses advertisements that appear next to hateful and provocative content from users.

Removing Boogaloo Groups

On Tuesday afternoon, the social media giant announced that it has removed more than 200 Boogaloo groups from the platform. This is happening a month after US federal officials alleged these anti-government extremist groups used the platform for nefarious purposes.

The extremists were reportedly planning to murder a federal agent.

Modern technology may have given voice to those in need, but it has also provided a platform for hate speech. Facebook is one of the biggest platforms with the greatest number of extremist movement cases.

Aside from the groups removed, the company has also disabled 95 Instagram accounts, which violated its policies against violence. Additionally, 400 more groups allegedly in association with Boogaloo movements will also be taken down.

The Boogaloo is a heavily armed group that mostly consists of conservative libertarian militia movement members. The group has associations with extreme views against the US government and is actively advocating a violent uprising against law enforcement.
