Cathay Pacific Aimed by Hong Kong Protesters

Hong Kong rally organizers prepared on Wednesday for outside the Cathay Pacific’s airport offices. In addition to that, they moved the protest downtown after the police denied permission. And the airline gave a warning regarding the illegal demonstration.

Moreover, the HKCTU (Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions) changed the venue place of the revolt. On its Facebook page, they announced their movement to the central financial district to make sure of their safety. And they are aiming Cathay staff dismissals. Also, an atmosphere dubbed as white terror.

Then, they will begin the protest around 4 p.m. The phrase “white terror” in Hong Kong is popular to describe anonymous acts creating a climate of fear.

In the statement of the carrier on late Tuesday, they stated that the police already banned the said protesting Cathay City, the airport’s headquarters. And they also said they don’t tolerate violent activities and staff who took part.

Cathay in Protests

Since June, crosswinds between authorities in Beijing and anti-government protesters staging violent demonstrations always damages Cathay. And these have grown to pose the former British colony’s greatest challenge since it came back to the Chinese rule in 1997.

Aside from that, China strongly appealed to suspend staffs involved or supports the demonstrations. And according to HKCTU, the firm already fired about 20 pilots and cabin crew.

The airline stated, “Cathay Pacific wishes to emphasize that it fully supports the upholding of the Basic Law and all the rights and freedoms afforded by it.” And this statement refers to the mini-constitution ruling Hong Kong.

Then, since President Xi Jinping took power in 2012, the protests in the Asian financial hub posed as the greatest challenge for Communist Party rulers in Beijing. And authorities from Beijing even delivered a sharp warning about a forceful intervention to subdue the violence.
