Boris Johnson in Working from Hospital Despite COVID-19

On Monday, the UK Prime Minister said he was in “good spirits” and was leading the government’s efforts to tackle the COVID-19 epidemic despite being hospitalized.

The UK’s first secretary of state, Mr. Dominic Raab said the PM had a “comfortable night” in hospital.

At the daily press conference on Monday, Raab told reporters that it was a precautionary measure because the PM continues to show persistent COVID-19 symptoms, 10 days after he had tested positive for the virus.

The British law provides that Raab would assume PM responsibilities if Boris becomes unable to.

Earlier on Monday, Boris said he went to the hospital for “routine tests” after experiencing persistent COVID-19 symptoms 10 days after contracting it.

He also tweeted, saying he was in good spirits working together with his team to combat the COVID-19 outbreak and keep everyone safe. The PM had been in self-isolation at his flat before being admitted to St. Thomas’ Hospital in London.

In a second tweet, Boris thanked the NHS staff for taking care of him and others in such an awkward moment – calling them the best of Britain. He also urged everyone to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives. The UK has been on lockdown for over two weeks now.

On Monday, Raab assured the British people that the government was working hard towards defeating the pandemic. And seeing the nation through the challenges ahead.

On Sunday, Boris’ symptoms changed from mild to persistent, but Raab insists that he would continue to lead the government from the hospital, despite his illness. He added that Boris has a team that implements and follows through his instructions.

Coronavirus pandemic in the UK

According to Johns Hopkins University, 48,451 people have contracted the virus, while 4,943 of them have died. Prince Charles is among those tested positive but emerged from self-isolation last week. He is the heir to the British throne.

On Monday, the UK’s Department of Health and Sciences said the death toll was up 439 from the previous day. It also confirmed that of the 208,937 people tested, 51,608 had turned out positive.

Queen Elizabeth 11 (Charles’ mother) called the pandemic a “different” kind of challenge while addressing the nation in a rare television speech.

She urged the UK to join hands with all the nations globally in a joint endeavor, using advanced science and the inherent compassion to heal. She said we would succeed – and the success will belong to all of us.

“We will meet again,” she added, referring to the British song Vera Lynn made famous during World War II.
