Biden and Xi discussed global issues in a phone call
On Friday, the President of China Xi Jinping and the U.S. President Joe Biden talked for the first time after February.
It was the second call between these leaders after Biden took his position in January.
The White House said after the call on Friday morning that President Biden emphasized the United States’ permanent interest in stability, peace in the Indo-Pacific, and the world. The two leaders also talked about the responsibility of both countries to guarantee peace. Besides that, they declared that the competition does not turn into conflict.
Chinese state media verified the call quickly after the meeting.
In the report, Xi said that appropriate departments could cooperate on climate, economic and business recovery, Covid prevention. He also mentioned that they should focus on significant international and regional issues based on mutual respect.
He also said that the confrontation between the U.S. and China would harm both countries and the world. At the same time, everybody will benefit in the case of their cooperation.
The state media report Biden’s comments, including a statement that these countries do not have any reason to start conflict due to competition.
These leaders last spoke in February, before the Lunar New Year. The call lasted almost two hours. Friday’s call only lasted for approximately 90 minutes. During this call, they discussed various transnational and economic issues. The official said that two leaders could be honest with each other without lecturing.
Both Countries Develop Regional Ties
Biden has a plan for dealing with China that focuses on cooperating with established U.S. allies. The former Trump administration had different approaches regarding applying tariffs and sanctions on China.
This summer, the geopolitical landscape turned more complex after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the take over of the Taliban in a country that has a border with China.
