Amazon Inc. Goes Green with New Climate Label

Amazon Inc. ties the notch one step higher towards sustainability prospects, taking shoppers along the green lane.

Under the “Climate Pledge Friendly” environmental program, the firm will label some products that meet any of the 19 certifications of sustainability.

The new program aims to help its sustainability-conscious patrons to select one product or the other in the account of letting them know which brand made an extra mile to reduce its carbon footprint.

This will provide a significant thrust. Especially micro to small businesses advocating for zero-waste and sustainability, struggling to find a niche in the market due to stiff competition.

In 2019, the technology juggernaut founded The Climate Pledge, committed to being a zero-carbon business by 2040.

Since then, Amazon has continuously allocated a hefty sum on science-backed research and development. Thus, coming up with large-scale, long-term solutions to decarbonize operations.

To follow the path towards sustainability is not as easy as it looks. For a company to be considered as carbon-neutral, it has to reduce, offset, and capture all the pollution it produces.

In June this year, the company launched a generous $2 billion climate change fund. It was allocated to procure technologies that can reduce greenhouse emissions.

Before this, Jeff Bezos topped technology news. This occurred after he committed allocating $10 billion from his personal account to help the environment.

The hefty sum will fund scientific researches, NGO programs, and similar efforts to protect the earth from the impact of climate change.

In a medium-term goal, it strives to shift its overall operations towards renewable energy by 2025. At present, 25% of the company’s total production exhaust clean energy.

Towards Mindful Consumerism

During the early onset of the pandemic, Amazon Inc’s sales skyrocketed to unprecedented levels.

Being one of the largest logistics operators in the world, the e-commerce frontrunner pays particular importance to the carbon footprint of its parcels.

As it ships billions of parcels every year, it is imperative that the Bezos-owned company invests in programs to reduce environmental degradation.

So far, it employs the Compact by Design initiative to make its packaging more efficient. This aims to incorporate air and water in containers to use less physical packaging.

In terms of delivery, the firm committed to leveraging the use of modern technology by using its 100,000 electric vans to distribute parcels.

Recently, it also hitched an advance towards using electric-powered drones to make same-day delivery.

So far, more than 25,000 products sold in the platform already bears the label. This ranges from groceries, household products and cleaning materials, fashion and beauty products, and personal electronics.

Moreover, the marked units will occupy a special section in Amazon Inc.’s physical and online stores for easier identification. Additional information about sustainability will be provided in each product page.

To make the initiative realizable, the modern technology firm partnered with accredited third-party certifications. This was to ensure that products bearing the label indeed pass industry standards.

The firm will incentivize its selling partners to produce sustainable products to lead them towards its vision of being a zero-waste entity by 2040.
